Los Angeles County prosecutors today charged former Canyon Country resident Brent Darrin Zubek with two counts of capital murder in the deaths of a man and a woman whose bodies were discovered in August in Chatsworth.
The 43-year-old Zubek, charged Aug. 24 with multiple counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer and other charges following a manhunt that ended in a shootout in Encino, is scheduled to be arraigned today on the amended complaint in San Fernando Superior Court, Department S, said Deputy District Attorney Michael Blake with Target Crimes Division.

Blake amended the complaint to add two counts of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of multiple murders, making Zubek eligible for the death penalty, and the special allegation of personal use of a firearm. He said both victims died of multiple gunshot wounds.
The decomposed bodies of John David Lee, 40, and Oletta Jean Williams, 28, were discovered Aug. 12 in the 20400 block of Lassen Street. Police believe the slayings occurred about five to six weeks before the bodies were discovered near the home where Zubek and the two victims once lived.
Zubek was arrested on Aug. 22 by LAPD after first eluding police for several hours then firing on officers who had him under surveillance. He was shot in the hip by officers after he pulled a gun and pointed it at them. No officers were injured.
Zubek was due in San Fernando Superior Court today to set a date for his preliminary hearing on six counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer, one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of carrying a loaded and stolen firearm. The original complaint – filed Aug. 24 -- alleged that he personally discharged a firearm.
Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek the death penalty. Zubek, who lived in the Shadow Pines area of Canyon Country in 1993 when he went to prison for a string of bank robberies in Los Angeles and San Diego counties, is being held without bail.
