Santa Clarita residents are invited to put on their walking shoes and dream of a better life for American veterans.
The 3rd annual American Dream Walk, hosted by the Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys, will be held on Saturday October 15, starting at Pacoima Plaza,13500 Paxton Street in Pacoima.
In the past, the American Dream Walk has mostly benefited the San Fernando Valley, but that’s not the case this time, according to Sarah Steffen, Marketing Coordinator Habitat For Humanity.
“All proceeds raised from Santa Clarita Businesses and residents will go toward the SCV Homes for Heroes program,” said Steffen.
SCV Homes for Heroes builds on Habitat for Humanity’s model of providing affordable housing and connecting families to services that promote education and self-sufficiency, including offering programs specifically designed to address the needs of civilian veterans.

The three-phase program includes:
- Phase 1: A Brush With Kindness — Sponsored by Southern California Gas Company, this program brings together donated materials, volunteers, and resources to help veterans who need repairs or modifications on their existing homes.
“We will rehabilitate, refurbish and remodify their homes. And this is veterans with disabilities, older veterans that have new disabilities, maybe families of the fallen, or people who just have homes that need a lot of work due to certain situations from returning to war where they can’t afford to manage to do the necessary upkeep to their home,” Steffen said.
- Phase 2: Neighborhood Revitalization — Working with partners and the City of Santa Clarita, this phase will occur simultaneously with A Brush With Kindness and will focus on renovating foreclosed properties in redevelopment areas selected by the city for veteran families to purchase.
- Phase 3: Veteran “Enriched” Neighborhood — This phase, which will launch at a later date, will offer life skills to veterans and their families to become self-sufficient. The Enriched Neighborhood model brings social and educational services into a neighborhood. The goal is to build a veteran-specific community in the Santa Clarita Valley that includes a number of new homes, an urban garden, playground and educational services.
The 3rd annual American Dream Walk event will feature a walk, a home dedication ceremony and a community BBQ with live entertainment.
Former Los Angeles Dodger Steve Garvey will serve as Grand Marshal.
Last year Habitat had over 900 walkers for this event including many Hollywood stars, corporate and community leaders and volunteers from across our region, and was able to raise over $85,000.
This year Habitat hopes to have 1,500 people and are working to far exceed last year’s fundraising total.
Individuals from Santa Clarita can start a team, sponsor someone who is registered, or come out and walk as an individual. All ages are welcome.
