The West Ranch baseball team beat El Camino Real and one of the top high school pitchers in Southern California, 2-1, at USC.
West Ranch scored both of its runs in the first inning. Josh Heinz doubled in Dakota Hernandez and JC Cloney followed with an RBI double.
West Ranch beat El Camino starter Jose Cardona, the City Section player of the year in 2010.
The Valencia baseball team is ranked No. 4 in the most recent CIF Southern Section Division I poll. Valencia lost to Chatsworth in the championhip game of the Easton Southern California Showdown.
The Hart baseball team, which won the consolation championship of the Showdown, is ranked eighth.
The Valencia softball team, fresh off winning the Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Ariz., is the No. 1 team in the latest CIF Southern Section Division I poll.
The Canyon softball team, which reached the semifinals of the Hart tournament over the weekend is ranked eighth in the Division I poll.
The College of the Canyons men’s golf team won the Canyon Invitational at Valencia Country Club by 13 strokes over Bakersfield College.
COC shot 370 as a team. Three golfers from COC shared the low round. Max Cohen, James Holley and Tyler Schwanz each shot 1-over par 73s.
The COC golf team is undefeated in Western State Conference matches and ranked No. 1 in Southern California.
The West Ranch boys golf team finished second in the Oak Park Invitational at the North Ranch Country Club in Thousand Oaks.
The three-man West Ranch team shot 236. Chaminade won the 32-team tournament with a team score of 223.
CJ Espino had the low round for West Ranch at 4-over par, 76.
The Valencia boys golf team was fifth with a team score of 245. Jonathan Chang was 6-over par, 78.
The Santa Clarita Christian baseball team beat Lancaster Baptist, 12-6. Ryan Fullarton gave up one run on two hits and struck out nine in four innings. He also hit a two-run home run and was 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs.
Two players from the College of the Canyons women’s basketball team earned all-state honors. Sophomore Kelli Lewis earned first-team all-state honors from the California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
Freshman Jazzmyn Davis was selected to the all-state third team.
The Dodgers lost to the Texas Rangers, 5-4, in spring training in Arizona. Not that it’s any reason to panic, but the Dodgers are 5-15 in Cactus League play. They have lost eight games in a row and won only two of their past 10.
To make matters worse, starting third baseman Casey Blake is the latest Dodger with a sidelining injury. He had an MRI on his back after hurting it running to first base against the Giants on Saturday.
Pitchers Vincente Padilla had arm surgery and Jon Garland might be headed for the disabled list because of a strained oblique muscle.
The Lakers rallied in the second half, clamped down on defense and beat the visiting Orlando Magic, 97-84.
Kobe Bryant was nursing a sore ankle and scored only 16 points. His teammates picked him up though. Andrew Bynum scored 10 points and had 18 rebounds. Lamar Odom scored 16 points off the bench.
Next up for the Lakers are the Minnesota Timberwolves at Staples Center on Friday night.
The Kings are in Nashville for a game against the Predators tonight. The Kings are coming off an exciting, last-second win over the Dallas Stars. The Kings have won four games in a row on the road.
The Predators have won three straight games at home.
