The Canyon girls basketball team has new life. Canyon is the No. 9 seed in the CIF State Division II girls basketball playoffs and will play eighth-seeded Monache from Porterville in the first round of the Southern California Regional.
Canyon is on the road to open the playoffs. Monache is 130 miles away, and a three-hour bus ride, in Central California on the edge of the Sequoia National Forest.
Canyon lost to Buena in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs. Monache won the Central Section Division II championship over Yosemite.
The first round of the CIF state playoffs begins on Tuesday.
The Valencia softball team won a pair of games in the Stu Penter Classic in Corona over the weekend. Pitcher Carly Mortensen won both games.
Valencia beat Great Oaks, 6-2, in the first game. Mortensen struck out seven in the complete-game win.
Valencia shut out Canyon Springs, 2-0, behind a 13-strikeout performance by Mortensen.
Maddy Jelenecki drove in four runs in the two games for Valencia. Bethany Kemp had five hits.
The Hart softball team beat Lancaster, 5-0, on a combined no-hitter by Emili Escamilla and Blake Lewis in the Hart Softball Tournament at Central Park.
Jessica Jones homered for Hart. In the second game of the tournament, Hart beat El Camino Real, 2-0, in eight innings.
Hart, West Ranch and Canyon advanced to the semifinals of the tournament. Hart and Canyon will face each other next weekend.
West Ranch, last year’s surprise winner of the Hart tournament, will play Highland in the other semifinal.
The College of the Canyons women’s basketball team saw its playoff run come to an end.
COC lost to Mt. San Antonio College, 66-57, in the semifinals of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional.
Kelli Lewis and Tinky Dahte each scored 14 points apiece to lead COC.
The Hart baseball team beat Moorpark, 12-2, in the Easton Southern California Showdown. Hart starter Garrett Gooding took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He struck out six and allowed two runs on one hit in six innings.
Alex Tenorio hit a solo home run in the third inning for Hart.
Hart plays Thousand Oaks in the championship round of the tournament on Tuesday.
The Canyon baseball team lost to Oxnard, 3-0, in the Southern California Royal Invitational. In the first game of the Royal Invitational, Canyon beat Eastside, 9-5.
Canyon’s Jacob King drove in three runs against Eastside.
The Lakers impressively beat the San Antonio Spurs, 99-83, to win their seventh game in a row.
Kobe Bryant scored 26 points in 31 minutes. Lamar Odom scored 15 points off the bench. The Lakers had a 64-35 lead at halftime and cruised in the second half.
Next up for the Lakers is a road trip to Atlanta for a game against the Hawks on Tuesday night.
The Dodgers lost to the Chicago Cubs, 5-3, in extra innings in Cactus League play. DJ LeMahieu hit a two-run home in the 10th inning for the Cubs.
Marcus Thames went 1-for-3 and drove in a run for the Dodgers.
In hockey, the Kings are home tonight for a game against the Dallas Stars. The Kings are coming off a 3-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.
The Stars beat the San Jose Sharks, 3-2, on Saturday.
