A Newhall man was stabbed by a stranger while he was sorting recyclables near 5th Street and Pine Street in Newhall shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday.
According to Lt. Brenda Cambra, the victim was in the alley behind the 24000 block of Arch Street putting bottles and cans into his car when he was approached by another man.
The suspect asked the victim where he was from in Mexico, then pulled out a small, red pocket knife and stabbed the victim in the upper torso and the right hand before walking away from the scene.
The victim was able to call the sheriff’s department for help. When they arrived, they quickly found the suspect, Rodrigo Escobar, 27, of Newhall in the area. The knife was recovered and Escobar was taken into custody on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics from the county fire department. Escobar remains in custody at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, being held in lieu of $30,000 bail.
