The Master's College men's soccer team got a goal from an unlikely player and won, 1-0, over Indiana Tech in the NAIA men's soccer national tournament in Fresno.
Andy Hegg converted on a penalty kick, only his fifth goal in two years of playing for The Master's College, and put his team in the quarterfinals of the NAIA soccer tournament for the first time in school history.
Goalkeeper Kevin Lawson stopped all three shots on goal by Indiana Tech and recorded his 13th shutout of the season. The Master's College, ranked No. 7 in the NAIA, will play the winner of today's game between Notre Dame of Ohio and Benedictine of Kansas.
The College of the Canyons men's soccer team was eliminated from the California Community College Athletic Association men's soccer playoffs. Santa Ana College shut out COC, 4-0, in the regional final.
In college basketball, The Master's College men's team got 16 points and six assists from Joey Fuca and beat Montana Tech, 57-46. Raphael Harris scored 14 points in The Master's College fourth win of the season.
In high school soccer, the Saugus boys team got two goals from Manny Padron in a 4-1 win over Moorpark in its season opener. James Bunch scored the other two goals for Saugus.
In high school basketball, the Canyon boys won their first game of the season, a 63-41 rout of Santa Clara in the Burbank Tournament. Canyon continues play in the tourney today against La Salle of Pasadena.
