Valencia's Nick Delio won the SCGA Match Play Championship at Sandpiper Golf Course in Goleta on Wednesday, defeating the reigning SCGA Amateur champion, Austin Graham of San Clemente.
Delio, who plays for Cal State Northridge golf team, had to rally after Graham came back from being down three holes with five holes to play. Graham closed the gap with birdies on the 15th and 16th holes, but Delio maintained his lead over the final two holes.
"My length (off the tee) is a huge advantage in match play," Delio said after his win. "Normally I'm always playing second, so I know what I have to do from the fairway based on what my opponent does."
The Saugus High graduate was up one with the par-3, 18th hole left to play. Both players parred the last hole, giving Delio the win and the Match Play Championship.
