What rebuilding year? One year after the Valencia Vikings softball team won their first ever CIF Championship behind five NCAA Division I seniors, the Vikings became the first team since 1995 to defend the CIF Division I Championship. In a season initially dubbed a rebuilding year, the Vikings marched to their eighth straight Foothill League Championship and defended their CIF title with a 3-0 win over previously undefeated Simi Valley on Saturday in Irvine. The Vikings were lead by senior Jessica Spigner, who pitched a four-hit shutout in her final game before heading to the University of Tennessee, and senior Alyssa Garza, on her way to Sacred Heart following a two-hit performance including an early RBI.
Irwindale felt like home for some Santa Clarita locals on Saturday night at Toyota Speedway, as two locals took home wins in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. 17-year-old Valencia High student Connor Cantrell took home his third win of the season, continuing to close in on the series points lead in the King Taco Super Truck division. Newhall’s Travis Thirkettle brought home his first win of the year in the AC Delco Super Late Model division. Thirkettle currently sits in fourth place in the points.
The Los Angeles Dodgers lost two out of three to the New York Mets over the weekend. The Dodgers return home tonight to host the Colorado Rockies, live on KHTS at 6:30pm.
