Mother did not properly secure the child seat.
Just after 12:00 this morning, CHP officers witnessedfirst hand as an intoxicated woman crashed her vehicle, seriouslyinjuring her two year old child.
41 year old Angela Bass was driving her 2002 Chevrolet on thenorthbound 14 freeway just past Sand Canyon Road. According to theCalifornia Highway Patrol, her level of intoxication led to hermaking an “unsafe turning movement,” causing her car tolose control.
Two CHP officers happened to be assisting a disabled vehicle onthe highway when Bass’ vehicle nearly struck them and theirpatrol car. The officers then reported seeing the car go off thehighway, down a steep dirt embankment.
Emergency crews were immediately notified, and CHP and Firecrews rendered medical aid. A two year old boy riding in the carwas found to have not been properly secured in his child seat. Thatcaused the seat to move forward during the collision, resulting inthe child sustaining serious injuries.
Bass suffered only minor injuries, as she was found to have notbeen wearing her seat belt correctly either.
Both mother and son were taken to Henry Mayo for treatment. Basswas arrested on Felony Driving Under the Influence charges andFelony Child Endangerment.
