In what has been dubbed a season of “Firsts” (first family concert, “Peter and the Wolf”; first visual arts concert, “An Evening at the Palace” with the Repertory Eaast Playhouse), the Santa Clarita Symphony, the Santa Clarita Valley’s only professional symphony, will host its first per-plate dinner fundraiser this Saturday, June 16 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Sand Canyon home of City Councilman and Mayor Pro-Tem Bob Kellar.
“It has been quite a run for us,” said Symphony Marketing Director John Dow. “ The Symphony has experienced tremendous growth in three short seasons, from launching our inaugural event in 2004, to producing more than 23 events this last season. Saturday’s event our largest fundraiser of the year and will help underwrite the programming for the upcoming season.”
In the middle of a hectic charity benefit and graduation season, the Symphony fundraiser will offer a bit of a respite featuring dining alfresco by candlelight under the oaks while soothing jazz and Latin background music plays, performed live by La Camerata, one of Los Angeles’ hottest quartets.
The La Camerata quartet features Santa Clarita Symphony members Philip Vaiman and Marissa Steingold. The Symphony has made it a point to incorporate local art into all of their performances, often staging art shows in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons prior to their shows.
Saturday will be no different: Santa Clarita Artist Association Plein Air and Impressionist Artist Lorelle Miller will be on hand to paint the event. The reception will feature a fine Whiskey and Port Library, sponsored by Cindy Smith of RSVP Catering. Fundraiser-goers will be able to step into an outdoor living space and sample rare, hand-crafted 20-, 31- and 40-year-old Bourbon and Scotch.
While munching on tray-passed appetizers such as Spinach Gnocchi with Gorgonzola Cream, evening participants will also be able to screen previous concert performances in the outdoor home theater courtesy of Brad Sundberg from BSUN Media Systems. The dinner will feature a Symphony of Artisan Breads; Salad of Roasted Beets, Field Greens and Toasted Walnuts with Goat Cheese Coins and Toasted Walnut Vinaigrette; and Frenched Breast of Chicken with Provencal Sauce, served over Panko Crusted “Mashed Potato" Cake with Knotted Chinese Long Beans.
Dessert will include scrumptious Brittle-Topped Vanilla-Butterscotch Pudding Parfaits and Shortbread Cookies with Chocolate Musical Notes, all accompanied by freshly brewed Peets Coffee. A minimum donation for the Symphony’s “An Evening Under the Oaks” is $200.
