Rabbits Are Not Easter Gifts

Thirty rabbits found their way to County of Los Angeles Animal Care Centers in only one week following last Easter, none of them chocolate!

These real bunnies may look cute in baskets, but like dogs and cats, they require real care and attention.  Some LA County families found this out the hard way last year.

This year Marcia Mayeda, Director of the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC), wants to encourage families to remember the homeless rabbits waiting for their fresh start today in County Animal Care Centers.

“If a family is seriously considering adding a new pet over the holiday, I hope they will come to our animal care centers. If they are not ready for a ten year commitment to care for a living gift, I hope they will consider other fun alternatives, like stuffed animals and chocolate rabbits,” Mayeda said.  It will be a “hoppy” holiday for animal care staff if families make the right choice this Easter season.

DACC is seeking help from the public to open their hearts to adopt these rabbits and the many other rabbits in County animal care centers.

Rabbits are generally low maintenance animals and require the same amount of attention and socialization as a cat or dog. They need regular interaction with humans in order to stay socialized.

They also require about one hour each day out of their cage (can be indoors, as long as there is enough sun-lit space) to play and exercise. Rabbits can also be easily litter box trained, making them perfect pets for apartments or small homes.
