The Real Side – March 21, 2013
Today on The Real Side! New Jersey Governor Chris Christie made an appearance before citizens in Paterson and got into a shouting match with a resident who repeatedly interrupted him and doesn’t want competition in education. Kyle Olson with EAG News (a website dedicated to education reform) joins Joe to discuss. According to Olson, some people want a “one size fits all” school system without choice. Joe argues that some students who are doing very well actually start to regress in a “one size fits all” setting because they aren’t being challenged. The person arguing with Christie was not identified, but seemed to be an activist. Christie was able to institute some tenure reform and create more charter schools and online programs, which has helped chip away a bit at the status quo, according to Olson.
Joe believes that the relationship between teachers and students has broken down because of social media and texting, and Olson agrees. They both believe it has become easier in public schools for teachers to prey on students, as a result of lowered moral standards couple with far easier ways for the two to communicate outside of school.
Joe also mentions the knocks on Christie for his method of discourse-loud and abrasive. Joe believes sometimes when you need to get attention and break through to people, you need to “puff yourself up” and show people you’re not afraid. He doesn’t believe it’s being disrespectful, it’s matter of standing your ground.
