The Real Side - March 13, 2013

Joe spends the first half of the show discussing our continuing budget issues. Where is Obama’s budget? And lo and behold, the Senate leadership has finally released a budget after four years. The budget calls for nearly 1 trillion dollars in new taxes? As you can imagine, Joe’s not too optimistic about it.

However, the big news of the day happened earlier in the Vatican City, as the Catholic Church has a new leader. Father Andres joined Joe today and commented on the importance of the newly appointed Pope Francis I. What does this mean to the Catholic Church, and to it’s 1 billion followers around the world?

Father Andres talks about why having a new Pope is so important, and the idea of whether or not the Catholic Church should work toward modernization, or whether people should focus on changing their own beliefs instead. What kind of a Pope will Francis be? Father Andres notes that although the United States is highly secularized, Argentina (Pope Francis’ country of origin) are still highly religious. He also notes that people in the US seem to think of their religion as a highly personal and private matter, which can be a negative, because moral conversations can be silenced.

Joe and Father Andres also discuss the idea that Francis I is considered by some to be a “reformer”- but what does that mean exactly? Father Andres believes the reform will happen within the Vatican itself, but does not anticipate sweeping change throughout Catholicism as a whole.
