Life Leadership with Alex Urbina – July 1, 2013
On today’s show Wendy sits down with SCVi Charter about bullying and how bullying is effecting kids in schools and outside as well.
Bullying is nothing new, Wendy said. I was bullied and have witnessed it myself.
Bullying is consistent over time and is often overused, Tracy said. Parents want to protect their kids and want something done immediately.
That takes away from what bullying is and it takes away from what it actually is and how to teach our kids how to protect themselves.
You have to teach the kids to be empowered, Tina said. It starts at the home and you have to talk to your kids before going to the school and jumping into the victim roll.
“I think there is a balance between letting your kid be the victim and standing up for themselves,” Alex said.
Some kids haven’t developed the confidence sometimes, so it is a dance sometimes to see where your kid is at, Alex said.
You can’t do it all for them, Wendy said. You have to guide them but not do it for them.
“It is a journey to discover your own self worth,” Alex said. “You want to fall down but you don’t want a hard crash. You are going to get hurt but you have to learn to get back up.”
There are actually three people that are affected by bullying, Tracy said. The victim, bystander and the bully.
“You want to empower the bystander to stand up for the victim,” Tracy said. “Also think of the bully and why they are bullying, there is always a reason.”
