Life Leadership with Alex Urbina – September 09, 2013

On today’s show, Alex and Wendy sit down with a facilitator and a parent of learners at SCVi Charter School and discuss what education is like in Australia and how it is similar and different from education and schools in the United States and Santa Clarita at SCVI Charter.

What is different about education in Australia than in the United States?

When I came to California I haven’t seen a difference from Australia with the schools because the only experience of American schools was at SCVi Charter and they are doing the same things as Australia does, Sally, a SCVi Facilitator said.

Natasha, a parent of SCVi Charter learner, had experience with public schools in America and it is totally different.

“The way the class is set up, it is difficult for a student to interact and learn,”she said. “But at SCVi Charter, it is very similar to Australian education and schools.”

In Australian schools there is a lot of collaboration. In schools in the States there just isn’t that method of teaching in most schools.

“I love that you said that,” Alex said. “In order to teach and learn and grow you need input from others and work as a team which SCVi does.”

When you make your kids work together and bounce ideas off each other, it is just so powerful for them to find the solutions on their own rather than telling them, Wendy said.

One major distinction between educational styles is that here in America, the education is very textbook driven, Natasha said. Back home in Australia we do have textbooks but it isn’t the central core of learner but rather a tool.
