SCVi charter students talk about their projects that they have this year. Brittany Hassen’s project is about baking. Brittany enjoys decorating and designing cakes and bake goods and with her being a bake sale was able to make $33.

Christian Robledo is pursuing SWAT and an occupation towards law enforcement. He had the opportunity to go to a tactical training. Placed second in a few events and first for some. In the explorer program and is trying to bring something back to the badge and remove the negative stereotypes that police have.

Trying to bring back the good name of the police. The personal project Christian set out to accomplish is to interview various officers.

“You have to put on a mask when at work and take it off when at home.” Said one of the officers Christian interviewed. “You are not a cop 24/7 and have to be able to relax.”

We are the only school that does a personal project and a real extensive project like this allows the students to go into a field they want to be in. Find out what is in their heart, Elizabeth said.

IIt is great that you get to have an experience so early, Alex said.

The personal project is a great project that allows the students to get that experience early and in a nutshell they pick their personal interest and a specific question that they have. then we find a education style that the project falls into. Then they pick a mentor, there isn’t a teacher following them but a mentor in the real world outside the school, Elizabeth said.

Paige Guarino’s projects is trying to remove a bus route off her street.

My goal is to do something in political science and government, Paige said. I wanted to pick something that may not be a problem but something we should fix. I made a proposal to remove a bus route that has had problems so it would be safer for the children on that street.

What I am hearing is that you are handling things in real life. It is not a fake project but real things that can change the city, Wendy Amara said.

“What are you gaining from this project,” Alex said.

Learning what it takes and systems in real life and how it is actually done.

A lot of our students do not see it as homework but they are always doing such interesting things that they are passionate about.

Jonny Wachter is creating a longboard deck for his project. I am getting the wood and designing the art that inspires me, he said. I am starting from scratch. I am researching different paints and adhesives that will make it last. So far I have my deck wood and have it shaped and now in the design phase, it is my passion.

SCVi is great because they allow and encourage their students to follow their passions, Alex said.
