Life Leadership with Alex Urbina – July 29, 2013
On today’s Show Alex and Wendy discuss the thought of encouraging your child and acknowledging their presence with guests from SCVi Charter School facilitator Jenni Williams and parent of a learner at SCVi Charter Brandy Sweeney.
We are heavy in their academics however we also want to build on emotional and other needs, Jenni WIlliams said. Everyday we share what is going on in the learners lives and we build on that and learn in a new way.
In groups I teach we share it so that they can let it go, Alex said.
With our groups we can use it as problem solving, Williams said. After recess we have talk time where each child says what they liked and didn’t like during that time.
It sounds like you are asking your learners to be present and be in the moment, Wendy said. Reflection is huge and teaching kids at an early age is great and a big thing in life that a lot of kids aren’t doing.
By saying your thoughts out loud they hear themselves say it and teach themselves and others, Alex said.
For me the power of teaching is mastering the emotional side of things and not just learning of memorizing facts and figures, Alex said.
I’ve noticed that with both of my children that they are becoming fearless and standing up for what they believe in, Brandy Sweeney said. My daughter feels supported by her facilitators to think outside the box and not be looked at weird but able to excel.
