Life Leadership with Alex Urbina – April 22, 2013
On today’s show, Alex and Wendy talked about project based learning. What is project based learning?
Project based learning is learning with hands on and by doing, Wendy said. A lot of kids when they are actually doing the material and get involved outside the box learn better or at least I think so.
Learning can be outside the box, Alex said. Experiential learning is very powerful and it can even better teach students how to do something.
Experiences in life are great teaching tools. Everyone remembers their first kiss and what experiential learning takes that moment and uses it as a learning tool. It can happen the same way in the schools. As you experience it, the lesson is ingrained in you and will last longer rather than just memorizing it and forgetting it.
The show’s guests were from SCVi Charter School which has project based learning. Erin and Keith are facilitators that are also evolving as teachers in the project based learning program or style. The teachers are stepping outside their comfort zone as well and that provides a great way for the students to grow even more.
What I hear you say is that there is no fixed way to a question or answer, Alex said.
Often teaching in a public setting, the teacher knows the outcome and guides the students their, Keith said. Now at SCVi you don’t know where the kids will go and it gets a little unnerving but it provides a great vehicle for growth.
What my part as a facilitator is to show them the way not demand the same way for every child, Keith said.
