Greg Smith was a floor installer for twenty five years. He makes sure that the customer gets what they want and encourages his customers to use their imagination. Greg said that when you install a floor it must be from front to back so that it does not confuse the eyes and have a better overall flow in the home.

Another option is vinyl which has problems with staining and ripping and can be expensive but cost effective because it is made of a solid fiber. If the vinyl dents, it can conform back to its shape. There are chemicals that can prevent staining on the vinyl. One advantage of vinyl is that it does not contain grout but the floor perforation must be done very well. The patterns and prints of today can make the surface look like wood. Vinyl surfaces are very common in hospitals and because of their atmosphere must be welded with heat.

Greg has also often had customers that want to put flooring in places it should not be. He says that wood is good for kitchens especially a harder wood such as an oak.It is very important to check the moisture of the wood because it absorbs and releases moisture which can negatively affect the adhesive of the wood floor.

Laminates are also a good option and are good floating floors that are very durable but you lose the look of genuine wood. Greg doesn’t like to install wood as a floating floor which has something placed on top to keep out noise. Engineered hardwood which is usually recommended is built for stability on a concrete foundation. Solid hardwood must include a plywood foundation for doors in the home. Solid wood floors include smooth finished floors which are often asked for from people from the east coast. This must include plywood on the bottom and can become troublesome because it creates a trip hazard. Particles placed in the finish can give the floor great durability. Wood stairs can also be placed in the upper hallway of the house and are beautiful, but the family must slow down on the stairs to prevent from falling.

For carpeting, Greg recommends nylon because it is durable. Another option is polyester because it cleans up well but will not last as long as nylon. A good combination of carpeting and tile is a solid option for the home.
