May is National Mental Health Month…
With the month of May marking the National Mental Health Month, Cary Quashen and Bob Sharits of Action Family Counseling come on the air to talk about suicide and some of the ways you can help someone who is struggling with depression or is suicidal.
“Most people that attempt suicide or follow through, they give warning signs,” Cary explains.
Colleen Reeves, Director of Student Health Services at College of the Canyons joins the show to talk about the Suicide Prevention Awareness event that will be happening at COC’s Valencia Campus from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 7, and May 8.
Dr. Brian Flame joins the show…
Sharing her experience with COC student’s last semester, Reeve’s explained, “We had 17 students that were in crises, and we were able to intervene and send them down a better path, the flip side is we had one suicide.”
Every year there are 1,100 deaths due to suicide amongst college aged individuals.
“Most people that attempt suicide show messages and warning signs.”
Dr. Brian Flame joins the show to talk about some of the signs that begin to show in those with depression and those who are contemplating suicide.
On these signs Dr. Flame says, “personality traits, hygiene and how they take care of themselves, distance from family and friends, missing or complaining about work or school.”
