Families in Action - Monday, June 17, 2013

Cary and Bob brought colleague, friend, and life coach - Alex Urbina onto Today on Families In Action for a very emotional hour. After briefly discussing the dangers of falling into addiction at an early age, the hosts got a call from a young man named Brian Mackey. Brian recently spent over ten years in prison, but before he began his incarceration, he ran into Cary. Through the years he spent behind bars, Brian slowly realized he needed rehab, and called the Families In Action as soon as he was out - and Cary offered him a choice: either get in Action and get clean or continue down a path of drugs and crime. Bob began to elaborate on some prison facts. For example, 80% of people in jail at this very moment, are incarcerated due to drugs. And the recidivism rate is also 80%. Shocking when you realize how many people like Brian are coming out of jail, with no other working skills than what is necessary to survive prison.

Alex shared a story about how he was parking his car and noticed a young woman parked to his side. As he was getting out of the vehicle, he realized this person was either asleep or physically in trouble. When Alex knocked on the door, the person in question was unresponsive with a hazy look in her eyes. He called 911 immediately and the woman was rushed to the hospital. His story has many morals, and one of which is simple: be observant, and stay alert. Be the change you want to see in the world, and helping your community and fellow humans beings.
