Families in Action
This week on Families In Action, Bob Sharits and Cary Quahan brought Chrissy McAfee on for a heavy and emotional hour. Her son passed away nearly three years ago from a heroin overdose. This was after four years of struggling to pull her son from the venomous tendrils of addiction through means of rehabilitation, studying and researching opiates to ultimately being overwhelmed mentally and physically trying to save her son. Chrissy McAfee is a model example of a parent that refuses to give up on their children. She proudly notes that she never loved her son any less, or felt her son had any moral shortcomings from being addicted to drugs. In fact, the wealth of knowledge she acquired from her interactions with her son are now the tools she uses to help other families. Chrissy now advocates awareness and informs other parents and young adults dealing with the tumultuous experience of drug addiction. Chrissy explained live, with the Families In Action crew, that her son actually achieved sobriety, and was doing excellent for a while. Got a job, had replaced old addict friends with a new, clean and healthy environment in another state. However, during the process of cleaning up his life, Chrissy’s son had to appear in court to check up with the judge and review his progress. While staying in California, he bumped into old friends, and that unfortunate encounter ultimately led to an overdose. Chrissy and Action Family Counseling are good friends, and are holding a candle lit vigil at the Action Family Zone.
