Syd Masterscalls in from New Mexico, a first time guest, we catch up with this multi-talented, award winning singer/songwriter/performer/entertainer. Syd Masters is a singer and songwriter of western music. He is the author and recording artist of the Official State Cowboy Song of New Mexico, making him the only person in the United States to hold such an honor. The Western Music Association, Academy of Western Artists and The New Mexico Music Industry have combined to nominate him for over than 60 awards over the past decade. “Vocalist of the Year,” “Country Song of the Year,” “Best Album,” Best Band,” “Most Humorous Song,” and “Best Song” are some of the categories in which he was victorious.

Syd Masters perseveres in building a legacy that enhances our understanding of Western Americana. Combining classic favorites with colorful songwriting, his music paints a vivid landscape of the emotions and dreams that move within each of us. The quality of this singer’s melodies branch from his accomplished musicianship, adoration of the mountains and prairies he calls home, and an elevated warmth for those who dance, listen and smile along with his songs. He and his Swing Riders are a highly talented, thoroughly funny, good time cowboy band!

Nancy, Bobbi Jean, and Mike enjoy an hour of great music and sparkling conversation with the always entertaining Syd Masters. We get things rolling with the back story to one of his most requested songs, “Frying Bacon in the Nude,” some might call it a “love song,” while others might call it a comedian’s look at a relationship that’s just a tad out-of-whack. (Don’t worry – it’s very family friendly!). Syd shares the story behind the next song, “Under New Mexico Skies,” a lovely tribute to his home state and the “Official State Cowboy Song of New Mexico.” Every lyric is a word picture – if you’ve never traveled through New Mexico, you’ll want to now!

Mike asks great questions about his earliest song and his songwriting practices. When Syd is writing a new song, he works words and melody together, at the same time. Some, like “Frying Bacon in the Nude,” are written quickly. Others,  take their time. His first song, The Lumberjack Song, was written when he was in grade school and living in Wisconsin.  He has found inspiration in his  local landscape ever since.

“Always a Cowboy in My Dreams,” is his 7th and newest CD, just released this summer. On the Vision label, this collection combines western classics with his own light hearted originals. He chose the cover artwork with great thought – rather than an image of his band or himself, as in previous recordings, he chose the artwork of Lon Megargee. Originally painted in 1948 it features a cowboy stretched out on the desert floor with is saddle as his pillow, up in the sky is a cloud shaped like a cowgirl astride her horse – notice the horse has the A-1 brand – there’s significance to that band  – “A-1” was the name of a very popular Southwest beer at the time, and this artwork graced the container of every 12 pack!

When Syd was writing the title track, “Always a Cowboy in My Dreams,” he thought about what it means to be a “cowboy at heart.” Doesn’t always mean doin’ the work of cowboyin’. For many of us, it means to be true to ourselves, to our ethics, to our future plans, to pursue our dreams, and to keep in our heart the virtues of the “cowboy way.” The cover art, the title track, and the collection of songs gathered here are a tribute to the best of western culture and music. Take a listen to the podcast for more – he’s entertaining, witty, and thoughtful. Quite a compelling hour!
