Alive and Well – Wednesday, May 1, 2013
Crystal Lacy Edwards is on Alive and Well this week to talk about child nutrition, and how to work and talk with your children about their dieting choices.
Dr. Marlene Schwartz, who serves as Acting Director for the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale University, comes on the show to talk about some of the good habits you can set forth with your children to keep them healthy.
“The strategy is to not put your child on a diet to lose weight, but rather to maintain their same weight so they can grow into that weight.”
The vast majority of calories children intake today are empty calories, or calories from solid fats and/or added sugars.
“Introducing salads at an early age can actually lead to bad eating habits,” says Dr. Schwartz, “you shape your child’s tastes when they are young, they get use to drinking the sweets from a young age.”
Marketing plays a huge impact on us leading us to think we need to be constantly providing our children with snacks, but Disney has been a leading power in the entertainment industry on improving their advertising and sales towards healthier food choices for children.
“There is an unconscious response,” Dr. Schwartz explains in regards to the impact that food advertisements have on our children.”
