Pink Slip Call Back
Some Newhall School District teachers can breathe a small sigh of relief.

The
to rescind just under half of the 109 layoff notices it issued prior to March
15.
The pink slips were issued to teachers, counselors and
administrators to compensate for the $2.4 million dollar cuts to the school
budget.
The district was able to call back 45 pink slips issued
before the March 15 deadline because of a potential increase in class size, and
the ability to use funding that would otherwise be used in other areas, said Marc
Winger, Superintendent of the
“We had to act conservatively,” said Beverly Knutson,
Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for the District. “Now the budget picture is starting to
clarify…we rescinded those we felt we could and we are looking forward to the
next round we can rescind.”
The current round lay-offs are in addition to the cuts that
the district has have been making for the past year and a half, totaling more
than $1.5 million.
The first set layoffs and cut backs were targeted at support
personnel, materials and supplies, and staff development budgets.
Another factor that contributed to the low numbers of pink
slips issued is the districts early retirement incentives.
“We hope that the number of people who leave us is more or equivalent
to the number of layoffs, to try and balance things out,” said Winger.
The school’s Governing Board is expected to finalize budget priorities
at their April 21 meeting, but actual layoffs aren’t expected until May
15.
