Families in Action: March 3, 2013
Welcome to Families in Action on your Hometown Station AM-1220 KHTS.
Most people don’t know that the family needs to be a large part of the treatment. One kid recovered from drug rehabilitation, the family took him out to diner and the dad bought him a beer, it was not long until he was back in rehab. When you have a person recovering from drug and alcohol addiction in your home, it is a good idea to help them by not drinking around them or keeping alcohol around the house.
Cary believes that there are many people invested in keeping people sick. Sometimes families and loved ones have such a fear of change and of the unknown, the family does not want things to be different.
Denial is such a big part of addiction, and not just for the user. Families often times hold a lot of denial. Often they will say “that’s just the way he is”, or “he’s just smoking pot”. Once the family and friends minimizes it, it makes it easier for the person to use drugs.
Imagine a recovering patient who has two teenage kids. They have slowly been “checking out” of his responsibilities. Mom is overwhelmed and the kids have had to build their own coping skills and become resentful. Dad goes through rehab and things are looking good, but what about the family? This family hasn’t had a dad in over 12 years and now he is present. Mom may not want to give up their responsibilities, the kids will not respect the new authority, it will become a difficult transition. We need to teach them how to step in and be the parent.
