Families in Action: Monday, January 13, 2014
On the most recent edition of Families In Action, brought to you by Action Family Counseling, hosts Cary Quashen and Bob Sharits invited Director of Student Services at William S. Hart Union School District. Cary and Bob were super excited to get Kathy Hunter on the show, because they have collaborated to manifest Santa Clarita Valley’s first sober school. The title is exactly how you would imagine, and more. Students commit to a drug free life, and take mandatory drug tests and engage in proactive and empowering classes, including the traditional general education courses required for graduation, like english, mathematics, etc. Cary noted that drug free schools are a standard for all public and private institutions nationwide, however, as reality proves, America’s youth is quite clever at finding ways to pursue “fitting in”. Mandatory drug tests are the only way to draw the line, and eliminate drugs firsthand. Kathy Hunter jumped into the conversation afterwards, and also explained, that having a sober school will set a new standard of quality of life for students in our community. Bob Sharits also explained how easy it is to fall into the daily struggles of peer pressure and fall prey to faltering focus for an adolescence searching for answers in life. For a sober school, that student would be around like minded peers, constantly being enveloped by loving, supportive, and diligent kids and staff.
