Families in Action: April 21, 2014
Welcome to Families In Actions with your host Cary Quashen and Bob Sharits on Santa Clarita’s Hometown Station, AM 1220 KHTS. This Saturday the 26 from 10 am until 2 pm , is National Drug Take Back Day at Henry Mayo Memorial Hospital.
This event is designed as a way for you to dispose of your expired and unwanted drugs in a safe way. Surveys have shown that the majority of abuse from prescription drugs come from family and friends medicine cabinets. People will even go to open houses just to dig through medicine cabinets. Unfortunately, since kids feel that it is from a doctor, it is safer than street drugs. The truth is that they can be just as dangerous and just as addictive as any other drug. Even if they are prescribed to you, be sure to take care not to take over the prescribed amount. We are treating more “Accidental Addicts” than ever before. This is a problem that covers all age groups, we are seeing a rise in the elderly becoming addicted to prescription medications. Twice as many americans are addicted to prescription medications than cocaine, heroin, inhalants, and opiates combined.
Remember it is not good to flush them down the toilet because it dissolves in our water system and become toxic. Also never throw them away because you never know who can get their hands on it after it is in the trash. People will even take the empty pill bottle and call in a refill.
Be sure to listen to the whole podcast so you don’t miss a thing.
