UPDATED: St. Louis Cardinals pick COC's Cory Jones In MLB Draft

khts_sportsCollege of the Canyons pitcher Cory Jones was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft.

Jones, a right-handed starter, transferred from Pepperdine to College of the Canyons for his sophomore season.

He was 6-0 in 11 games and had a 2.79 ERA at COC. Jones had 89 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings pitched.

According to MLB.com, Jones has a fastball in the mid-90s, but an inconsistent curveball and needs to develop a change-up. He was a starter in college, but will most likely be moved the bullpen as a short reliever.

Hart High grad Trevor Brown was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 10th round of the draft. He is a catcher and infielder at UCLA and playing in the NCAA College World Series.

The Bruins play Texas Christian University in the Super Regionals starting on Friday.

Brown is hitting .322 with three home runs and 50 RBIs in the first 59 games of the season for UCLA. He has a twin sister, Melissa, who is on the Tennessee softball team.

The Detroit Tigers picked Charles Gillies, a pitcher at The Master’s College, in the 10th round. The West Ranch grad from Castaic was 8-6 with a 2.17 ERA for the Mustangs. He had 118 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings pitched.

Valencia High senior Trey Williams was picked in the 11th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. He hit .378 with five home runs and 24 RBIs in his senior season.

He is committed to Pepperdine.
