Max Homa Paces Cal Into NCAA Match Play Golf Final

khts_sportsValencia High grad Max Homa saved his best golf round for the last round in the NCAA men’s Division I championship at Riviera Country Club.

The UC Berkeley junior shot a 3-under 68 in the third and final round of the tournament and finished in a tie for ninth place.

More importantly, he led Cal to a fourth-place finish and a spot in the NCAA match-play final. The top-eight teams in the tournament qualified for match play.

Cal will face San Diego State in the opening round of match play starting today.

It wasn’t such a good day on the golf course for Valencia’s Jonathan Chang in the CIF/SCGA tournament at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.

He shot a 6-over 78 and did not make the cut for the CIF state tournament.

In college basketball, Jazzmin Davis from the College of the Canyons, will continue her career at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Davis was a first team All Western State Conference selection and averaged a double-double in her two years at COC. She scored 14.0 points and grabbed 10.9 rebounds per game.

In the NBA playoffs, the Oklahoma City Thunder finally figured out the San Antonio Spurs and won Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals, 102-82. The Thunder snapped the Spurs’ 20-game winning streak and handed San Antonio its first loss in the playoffs.

Kevin Durant scored 22 points for the Thunder.

San Antonio leads the series, 2-1. Game 4 is in Oklahoma City on Saturday night.

The Miami Heat can take a 3-0 lead against the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals tonight.

The Heat have won the first two games of the series and are coming off a 115-111 overtime win on Wednesday night.
