COC Habitat Lounge to Host Architecture Exhibition

COC_habitat_loungeDowntown Newhall, known for its weekly farmers’ markets and countless shops and restaurants, is fast becoming a cultural hub in Santa Clarita. Recently, the City adopted the Downtown Newhall Specific Plan, which proposes a children’s museum as a new addition to Newhall’s distinctive character.

This weekend, students from the College of the Canyons architecture course ARCH 280: Advanced Design Studio, will present design concepts for this museum, The Discovery Center of the American West. Completed as end-of-semester design projects, they will be judged during a special student exhibition and jury presentation at the college’s new Habitat Lounge, located at the Westfield Valencia Town Center.

Students were asked to generate design concepts that addressed a variety of programmatic and environmental considerations at the museum’s proposed 1.7-acre site in the Heritage Junction section of Old Town Newhall.

Exhibits on display will include several physical 3-D models and 2-D architectural drawings, as well as a variety of hand drawn and computer generated conceptual sketches.

A jury of representatives from the City of Santa Clarita’s Public Works Department, COC faculty members, former COC architecture students and community members will judge the projects based on both their clarity and strength of design concepts. The most impressive project presentations will then remain on display for public viewing at the COC Habitat Lounge.

The exhibition will be held between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 26. For more information about the architecture program at COC, click here.
