COC's Chris Low Wins State Title In 800

khts_sportsChris Low from College of the Canyons won the state title in the 800 for the second year in a row.

Low won the 800 in 1 minute, 49.16 seconds at the California Community College Athletic Association track and field meet at Cerritos College. He was one of six athletes from College of the Canyons to earn All-America honors at the meet.

Jacqueline Keeley was third in the 400 hurdles, Amber Wright was fourth in the 400 and Joe Babrick was fourth in the javelin. The top-four finishers in each event earned All-America recognition.

The team of Keeley, Wright, Al’lajae Jasmine and Laurie Henigan finished in fourth place in the 4x100 relay at the meet.

In soccer, the Santa Clarita Storm beat Real San Jose, 2-1, on a penalty kick in stoppage time.

Andres Bueno, a Golden Valley graduate who also played at College of the Canyons, knocked in the game-winner in the final minute of the game at Canyon High School.

The Santa Clarita Blue Heat women’s soccer team lost its season opener, 2-0, to the Pali Blues at Valencia High School.

In high school golf, Valencia’s Jonathan Chang advanced to the CIF/SCGA tournament after shooting a 1-over 73 and finishing in a tie for 12th place in the Southern Section individual championship at Victoria Country Club in Riverside.

Chang was one of three golfers from the Foothill League in the Southern Section championship. Isaac Kim and Brandon Dooley from West Ranch did not make the cut.

Johnny Ruiz from Camarillo won the individual title with a 6-under 66. The CIF/SCGA tournament will be at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena on May 31.

In high school volleyball, the Valencia boys are alive in the CIF Southern California Division I Regionals. The Vikings will play Palisades, the City Section Division I champion, tonight in the first round of the Southern California playoffs.

Valencia reached the semifinals of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.

In high school ice hockey, Saugus beat Hart, 5-1, in the semifinals of the Ice Station Valencia league playoffs. Aharon Lara scored two goals for the Centurions.

The Northerners eliminated Bakersfield, 8-7, in the other semifinal.

Top-seeded Saugus plays third-seeded Bakersfield in the championship game on Monday.

In the NBA playoffs, the Lakers were eliminated in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals. The Oklahoma City Thunder won, 106-90.

In the NHL playoffs, the Kings can wrap up the Western Conference championship tonight in Phoenix. The Kings have a 3-1 lead in the series. They haven’t appeared in a Stanley Cup final since 1993.
