West Ranch, Saugus, Valencia Reach Second Round Of CIF Softball Playoffs

khts_sportsThe three softball teams from the Foothill League in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs advanced to the second round.

West Ranch took care of El Modena, 3-1, behind a stellar effort from Wildcats starter Bailey Foster.

Keeley Walsh came through with a two-run double in the fourth inning that proved to the be the difference in the game.

Saugus knocked off La Palma Kennedy, 8-6. Taylor Kister homered for the Centurions in a see-saw game.

Valencia came away with a tough, 3-1, win over Los Osos on the road. Vikings starter Carly Mortensen gave up only two hits and struck out 14.

It wasn’t such a prosperous first round for the Santa Clarita Christian and Trinity softball teams in the Division 7 playoffs.

Trinity lost to St. Matthias, 16-4. Santa Clarita Christian lost to Pomona Catholic, 23-0.

In soccer, the Santa Clarita Blue Heat opens its W-League season against the Pali Blues at Valencia High School on Sunday.

The Blue Heat are the reigning Western Conference champions in the W-League. Cynthia Jacobo, the W-League goalkeeper of the year and an MVP finalist, returns to anchor a veteran team.

Kickoff is a 5.

In gymnastics, Morgan Tolman and Jasmine Holmes led a team of six gymnasts from the Waller’s GymJam Academy at the Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships in Hampton, Va.

Tolman won the floor routine and was second in the all-around. Holmes was third in the vault and third in the all-around portion of the competition.

Jessy MacArthur was fifth in the vault. Alex Waller was fourth in the beam. Alya Turcotte was eighth in the floor and Alicia Gallarzo was 20th in the all-around.

In the NBA playoffs, the Clippers were blown out again by the San Antonio Spurs, 105-88, in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals.

The Clippers are down 2-0, but are coming home for Game 3 on Sunday.

In the NHL playoffs, the Kings are one win away from advancing to the Stanley Cup Final. The Kings beat the Phoenix Coyotes, 2-1, and have a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference final.

Anze Kopitar and Dwight King scored for the Kings. They can complete the sweep on Sunday at Staples Center.
