UPDATED: Compost Fire Continues To Burn, HazMat Called In

UPDATED 8:20 PM -The smell of smoke was strong across Santa Clarita Wednesday afternoon, as a compost fire continues to burn on the west side of Santa Clarita.

According to Los Angeles County Fire, the compost fire- called the Potrero Incident- is burning large piles of mulch near Potrero Canyon, west of Pico Canyon Road and Stevenson Ranch Parkway. Water drops were used off and on throughout the afternono.

Los Angeles County Fire reports on their Twitter feed that they are requesting HazMat crews on the scene of the fire, due to the possibility of toxic smoke in the plumes coming off the compost. They are also requesting light units and food dispensers, an indication that they will be working on this fire well into the night.

KHTS will update this story with new info as we receive it.

UPDATED Thursday, May 10th 5:55AM

According to Los Angeles County Fire Department, the fire has been 100% contained. A fire watch will remain in place until daybreak.
