Foothill League Baseball Standings Tighten Up

khts_sportsThe Foothill League baseball standings just got a little tighter.

Valencia beat first-place Hart, 4-2, and cut the Indians’ lead to one game with five games left to play in the league season.

Brian Mundell hit a solo home run and drove in two run for Valencia.

Hart lost only its second league game of the season.

Saugus and West Ranch are a game behind Hart after winning their games.

The Centurions beat Canyon, 8-4, scoring seven runs in the second inning. Austin Rodriguez hit a three-run home run. Dylan Freyre hit a solo home run in the first inning and knocked in two more runs with a double in the second inning.

West Ranch beat Golden Valley, 14-2, behind a five RBI day from freshman Jagger Rusconi. He had four hits, including a two-run, inside-the-park home run, and scored three runs.

In high school softball, West Ranch shut out Saugus, 13-0, and created a three-way tie for first place in the Foothill League standings.

Wildcats starter Bailey Foster tossed a three-hitter and had four strikeouts.

The Valencia softball team shut out Golden Valley, 12-0. Vikings starter Carly Mortensen struck out 14 and allowed only one hit.

West Ranch, Valencia and Saugus, the reigning Foothill League champion, are tied for first place with 4-1 records.

The Canyon softball team beat Hart, 9-8. Courtney Ziese hit two home runs and drove in three runs for Canyon.

Juli Strange hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning for Hart.

In high school golf, the West Ranch boys won the fourth Foothill League match of the season by 15 strokes over Valencia at the TPC Valencia course.

West Ranch shot 391 as a team to Valencia’s 406. Jonathan Chang shot the low round of the match, a 2-over 74.

In high school ice hockey, Saugus beat the Northerners, 1-0, in a shootout to stay undefeated in the Ice Station Valencia league. The two teams played to a 5-5 tie in regulation and overtime. Austin Ehrlich scored the only goal in the shootout.

In other games, Valencia beat West Valley, 5-3, Canyon beat Burbank, 9-1, and Bakersfield beat Hart, 5-3.
