What You Need To Know About Vessel Sinks

Tami_Smight_HeadshotWhat You Need To Know About Vessel Sinks

First of all, what is a vessel sink?  It looks like a bowl sitting on top of the counter.  They are often made of glass or ceramic pottery. They are very popular and often featured in showrooms.

If you are considering adding a vessel sink to a powder room or bathroom please consider the following important factors before purchasing.

Vessel_sinks_in_bathroomConsider who will use the bathroom. I recently advised a client to eliminate a vessel sink in her toddler’s bathroom.  The sink protrudes out and the simple act of teeth brushing poses a risk of knocking a tooth out of her son’s little mouth.  Traditional sinks are a much wiser choice for a children’s bathroom.

How tall is the person using the sink? The height of the countertop must be adjusted so the basin will sit at a comfortable height for the person using the bathroom.

Select a sink faucet that has a tall, gooseneck style, or one that mounts at the wall above the sink.  This is a plumbing issue, and may require drywall repair if installed in the wall.  Too tall a faucet results in messy splashing, too low results in inefficient use of the sink.

Vessel_SinkSo with all these considerations, why buy a vessel sink?  The best use for a vessel sink is a guest bath or powder room. I advise avoiding the vessel sink for a bathroom that gets lots of use, such as master bath or kid’s bath, as a dropped perfume bottle of nail polish bottle could easily chip or break the sink surface.

A sink is just one element of many material selections when renovating or designing a bathroom.  Help is always a phone call away.  Tami Smight Interiors will guide you through the entire process to ensure you are happy with the end result.
