West Ranch Advances To Quarterfinals Of CIF Boys Basketball Playoffs
Everything seems to be in favor of the West Ranch boys basketball team. The Wildcats ousted Edison, the eighth-seeded team in the CIF Southern Section Division 1A playoffs, 101-65, to advance to the quarterfinals.
Ninth-seeded West Ranch plays top-seeded Mission Viejo at home on Friday night. It will be a tough game against Mission Viejo, but at least West Ranch has home-court advantage.
Ako Kaluna recorded a double-double with 29 points and 15 rebounds against Edison. Kevin Harris scored 21 points for West Ranch. The Wildcats are making their second CIF quarterfinal appearance in school history.
While the West Ranch boys basketball team had reason to celebrate, three other teams from the Santa Clarita Valley saw their playoff runs come to an end.
The Canyon boys basketball team, the second seed in the Division 2AA playoffs, lost to Tesoro, 62-56, in the second round.
Canyon finished with the best record in school history at 24-4 and won 19 of its first 20 games.
Canyon’s Coley Apsay scored a team-high 22 points against Tesoro. Alek Golden made six 3-pointers and scored 18 points.
The West Ranch boys soccer team lost to Paramount, 2-1, in the Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.
Chris Tumasone scored the only goal for West Ranch.
The Santa Clarita Christian boys soccer team lost to the Academy for Academic Excellence, 2-1, in the second round of the Division 7 playoffs.
Santa Clarita Christian’s Christian Broadbent scored in the first half to tie the score 1-1. But The Academy for Academic Excellence scored early in the second half to take a one-goal lead.
Two teams from the Foothill League are in action in the Southern Section girls basketball playoffs tonight.
The Canyon girls are on the road and play Segerstrom in the second round of the Division 2AA playoffs.
The Saugus girls travel to Norco for their second round game in the Division 2A playoffs.
The Saugus girls soccer team is in the second round of the Division 1 playoffs and will play at San Clemente today.
In college basketball, The Master’s College men lost to Azusa Pacific, 82-67. Leif Karlberg led The Master’s College with 16 points.
The Master’s College women lost to Azusa Pacific, 80-58. Zoe Scott scored 17 points off the bench.
In hockey, the Kings lost to the Phoenix Coyotes, 5-4, in a shootout. The good news is the Kings actually scored some goals after being shut out in their past two games.
The bad news is the Kings have lost three games in a row and five of their past six.
The Kings will try to break out of their losing funk tonight against the Colorado Avalanche.
