UPDATED: Fire, Wind Warnings Extended Through Sunday 9 a.m.

khts_redflagwarning1UPDATED Saturday, 11:55 p.m.:

The National Weather Service has extended a red flag fire danger warning for the Santa Clarita Valley and other areas of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties overnight to 9 a.m. Sunday.

Simultaneously, a wind advisory remains in effect in the SCV until Sunday at 6 a.m., warning of winds blowing 35 mph or greater that can make high-profile vehicles dangerous to drive on the highways.

The initial red flag warning, set to expire at 6 p.m. Saturday, was extended tto Sunday morning due to persistent high winds, low humidity, and, not withstanding a few inches of rain last week, tinder-dry brush conditions ripe for wildfire.

A high pressure system over the west is generating persistent gusty northeast winds and very low humidity, increasing the danger of wildfires and prompting these warnings to firefighters and residents.

As surface high pressure builds across the Great Basin, an increasing offshore flow across Southern California with the peak of the Santa Ana winds is expected Friday night and into Saturday.

In the SCV, the service forecasts northeast winds 20-30 mph with gusts to 40 mph, decreasing to 15-25 mph by daybreak Sunday.

Mountain areas will likely see gusts in the 60-70 mph range, while coastal and valley areas will receive gusts between 45-55 mph.

Humidity readings in the area are generally expected to drop rapidly into single digits Friday night and early Saturday.

The offshore winds are expected to prevail through the weekend and gradually diminish Sunday, with very poor humidity recovery at night, according to the service.

Daytime temperatures will peak around 73 Sunday and dip to 47 Sunday night. Highs through the midweek will be in the upper 60s with temps in the mid-40s at night.
