High Wind, Fire Danger In SCV Through Friday Night

khts_redflagwarning1A red flag warning will be in effect in the Santa Clarita Valley and Los Angeles County mountains from 10 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Friday, as gusty winds and humidity in the teens and single digits heighten the danger of wildfires, according to the National Weather Service.

Northeast winds 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph will be common in the SCV through Friday night, and while winds will diminish Saturday, the service forecasts a 20 percent chance of rain Saturday night and Sunday.

Such wind velocity could knock down more trees and power lines, and make travel dangerous for truck and other high-profile vehicles.

The wind is combining with already dry conditions and a long spell of low humidity to create a heightened risk of forest fire.

If a fire does break out, the service warns, "there could be the potential for large fire growth with rapid fire spread."

Skies will be sunny Friday, with a high temperature near 70. Overnight low is expected to be around 51.

Saturday will be mostly sunny with a high of 72, and a 20 percent chance of rain after 10 p.m. and all day Sunday, which is expected to be partly sunny with a high near 65, according to the service.
