REDCAT To Feature Eckert Play As Season Opener
REDCAT will launch its interdisciplinary 2012 Winter/Spring Season of visual, performing and media arts with the Los Angeles premiere of Rinde Eckert's epic "And God Created Great Whales" on January 25.
Hailed as "total magic" by The New York Times, this Obie Award-winning work of groundbreaking music-theater is a morbidly funny and deeply moving operatic journey into the psyche of an eccentric composer as he desperately tries to complete his final opus: an opera based on Melville's Moby-Dick. Performances will be held at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater Wednesday, Jan. 25 – Sunday, Jan. 29

Eckert draws the audience into the haunted world of Nathan, whose struggle against mental deterioration forces him to rely on a tape recorder worn around his neck, in place of a working memory, as his obsession with the opera becomes as total as Ahab's quest for the white whale.
Directed by David Schweizer and featuring original cast member Nora Cole, these performances mark the return of Eckert's seminal 2000 off-Broadway production.
Eckert, the 2009 recipient of The Alpert Award in the Arts for his contributions to Theatre and finalist for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, is a writer, composer, performer and director. His Opera / New Music Theatre productions have toured throughout America, and to major theater festivals in Europe and Asia. For a full biography and to visit Eckert's website, click here.
Performances are scheduled at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; Sunday’s performance will be at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20–25 general, $16–20 students. Seating is general admission and tickets are available for purchase in-person at REDCAT Box Office, by phone at 213-237-2800, or online at www.redcat.org.
