Placerita Nature Center Volunteer Training Begins Jan. 10

placerita_kids_hikingThe Placerita Canyon Nature Center launches a nine-week training program for its Volunteer Docent-Naturalist tour guides with an orientation session on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 9 a.m.

Trainees meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon during the program. Volunteers in training will learn about the flora, fauna, history, ecology and geology of the Santa Clarita Valley. Instructors include noted professional in various fields. The course includes classes, short hikes and field trips.

“The training will qualify the volunteers to lead nature hikes for children,” said Russell Kimura, Regional Park Superintendent at the Placerita Canyon Natural Area.

The classes are free, but there’s a $45 materials fee, which includes insurance, t-shirt, field manual and instruction manual.

Other volunteer opportunities are also available at that don’t require the nine-week training program, such as office helper and trail maintenance team member. Bilingual (English/Spanish) volunteers are especially needed.

The Placerita Canyon Natural Area is a county of Los Angeles park located on the north side of the San Gabriel Mountains southeast of the city of Santa Clarita. The park’s address is 19152 Placerita Canyon Road, Newhall 91321, and it’s open sunrise to sunset Tuesday through Sunday. Parking and admission are free. The general phone number is 661-259-7721.
