Former COC Football Standout Selected To NFL Pro Bowl

khts_sportsFor the first time ever, the College of the Canyons has an NFL Pro Bowler.

New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who played for the COC football team, was selected to the NFC Pro Bowl team. He and teammate, quarterback Eli Manning, will represent the Giants in the Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

Pierre-Paul is the first COC football player to be selected to an NFL Pro Bowl team. He is fourth in the NFL in sacks with 15.5. He is also third on the Giants in tackles with 81.

In high school football, West Ranch running back Jeff Coprich won the Watkins State of California Scholar Athlete of the Year award recognizing the top African-American scholar athlete in the state.

Coprich carries a 3.5 GPA at West Ranch and led the football team with 1,246 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.

In college basketball, the College of the Canyons men opened the Cougar Holiday Classic with a 96-40 win over Orange Coast College.

In high school basketball, the Valencia boys reached the semifinals of the Chaminade tournament after a 66-49 win over Campbell Hall.

Troy Hammel hit eight 3-pointers and scored a school record 45 points for Valencia.

The Saugus boys basketball team beat Lancaster, 85-51, in the quarterfinals of the Chaminade tournament. Chris Lowckwood led Saugus with 18 points. The Centurions will face host Chaminade in the semifinals.

The Canyon boys basketball team beat Oak Park, 57-51, in the Ventura tournament. Coley Apsay and Clay Kasdorf each scored 19 points for Canyon.

The Hart boys beat San Fernando, 73-34, in the first round of the Hart Holiday Classic.

The Saugus girls opened the West Coast Holiday Classic with a 54-48 win over Burbank. Kim Smither scored 16 points for Saugus.

In hockey, the Kings are in Chicago for a game against the Blackhawks tonight. The suddenly resurgent Kings have won three of their past four games.

More importantly, the Kings are coming off a 4-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. It was the first time since Nov. 22 that the Kings scored more than two goals in a game.

The Kings will be a little shorthanded though. Forward Simon Gagne did not make the trip to Chicago. He is reportedly out with a concussion, according to ESPN.
