Top-Ranked Canyon Girls Basketball Team Wins By 20
The Canyon girls basketball team, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA, beat Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, 59-39, behind 26 points from Alia McCoy.
The Canyon girls have a tough test in their next game. They play Chaminade, the 10th ranked team in Division 4AA, in the opening round of the West Coast Holiday Festival on Monday.
The Saugus boys basketball team came within a bakset of upsetting another ranked team.
Saugus lost, 50-48, to Oxnard, the No. 15 team in the Southern Section Division 2AA poll. Jeremy Gatewood scored a team-high 13 points in the loss. Matt Coleman had 10 points.
In high school soccer, the Hart boys scored three goals in the second half and shut out Thousand Oaks, 4-0.
Anthony Caso scored two goals and Edwin Medina notched two assists for Hart.
Nico Ferrero gave Hart a 1-0 lead just before halftime with a goal. Oscar Martinez made it 2-0 with a goal early in the second half.
The Saugus girls soccer team played Alemany to a scoreless tie. It was the second time in as many games that a Foothill League team shut out Alemany. Hart won 3-0 on Tuesday.
In baseball, Saugus High graduate Tom Milone is part of deal that will send Oakland A’s All-Star pitcher Gio Gonzalez to the Washington Nationals.
Milone, a left-handed pitcher who went 1-0 with a 3.81 ERA in five starts, is one of four players from the Nationals who are headed to the A’s in exchange for Gonzalez.
In college football, Matt Barkley gave USC fans a reason to rejoice. He has decided to stay a Trojan and return for his senior season.
The USC quarterback was projected to be a top 10 pick in the NFL draft. He has opted to return to USC which is expected to be highly ranked and compete for a national championship next season.
The Darryl Sutter era with the Kings is off to a winning start.
The Kings won a shootout, 3-2, against the visiting Ducks to give Sutter his first win in his first game as the new coach.
Dustin Brown was the Kings savior again. He scored a goal in the third period and had the game-winner in the shootout.
The Kings have won two shootouts in a row and three of their past four games.
The Kings are back on the ice tonight against the San Jose Sharks. Listen to the game on AM 1220, KHTS. The puck drops at 7:30.
