Valencia, Canyon Boys Basketball Teams Capture Tournament Titles

khts_sportsThe Valencia and Canyon boys basketball teams made early statements with a pair of tournament wins over the weekend.

Valencia beat El Camino Real, 88-77, in the championship game of the Simi Valley tournament. Troy Hammel scored 18 points and earned tournament MVP.

James Glass led Valencia with 20 points. Zach Davis had 14 and Mike Zerpoli added 11.

Canyon beat Renaissance Academy of La Canada, 53-50, in the championship game of the Burbank Tournament.

Canyon’s Coley Apsay scored 18 and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Clay Kasdorf scored 15 points against Renaissance Academy and was the tournament MVP.

The Canyon girls basketball team is off to a great start as well. The Canyon girls won the Nike Central Valley tournament in Fresno, downing Clovis West, 59-57, in the championship game.

Alia McCoy scored 14 points and was selected to the all-tournament team. Jaya Schultz chipped in with eight points in the championship game and earned tournament MVP.

The Valencia girls basketball team beat Agoura, 62-55, in the third-place game of the Valencia High-Five Classic.

Saugus lost to Santa Monica, 47-43, in the fifth-place game of the High-Five Classic.

The West Ranch girls basketball team beat La Canada, 57-36, in the Crescenta Valley Tournament. Alexus Bryant scored 18 points to lead West Ranch.

The Golden Valley girls beat Simi Valley, 56-42, in the Crescenta Valley tournament.

In cross country, the Saugus girls finished in 12th place in the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Ore. Karis Frankian, in her fourth and final appearance in the national cross country meet, finished in 38th place completing the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 36.20 seconds.

Simi Valley sophomore Sarah Baxter won the girls race 17 minutes, 37.62 seconds.

The Golden Valley boys, making their first appearance in the Nike Cross Nationals, also finished in 11th place. Juan David Garcia was the highest-finishing runner from Golden Valley in 62nd place and completed the course in 16 minutes, 6.23 seconds.

At the Footlocker Cross Country West Region meet, Golden Valley’s Chelsea Totten finished in 45th place in the girls seeded race in 19 minutes, 32 seconds.

West Ranch’s Samantha Phillips finished in 96th place and teammate Taylor Welker came in 139th place.

In the boys seeded race, Canyon’s Adam Driedger was the top finisher from Santa Clarita high schools. He was 205th.
