COC Freshman Wins CCCAA State Women's Golf Championship

khts_sportsKristin Grimes, a freshman at the College of the Canyons, won the California Community College Athletic Associations women’s golf state championship at Kings Country Club in Hanford.

She shot 11-over par in the two-day tournament and won by two strokes. She shot 4-over on the first day and was 7-over on the second day. Hanna Lee of Glendale College was second at 13-over par.

Grimes made three birdies over the two days of the tournament. She was 1-over par on the six par-5 holes on the Kings Country Club course.

She also earned All-American honors by winning the state championship.

In the CIF girls tennis playoffs, West Ranch will move on to the semifinals of the Division 3 bracket. Valencia and Hart lost in the quarterfinals.

West Ranch, the top-seeded team in the Division 3 playoffs, beat Wilson on games, 78-71, after the two teams tied, 9-9.

Hart lost to St. Margaret’s, 11-7, after making an unexpected run starting in the wild-card round. Valencia narrowly lost to Malibu, 71-58 on games.

Six players from the Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team made the All-Big West team. Two are graduates of Santa Clarita high schools.

Saugus grad Brielle Slepicoff, a senior defender on the CSUN soccer team, earned a spot on the all-conference second team. Canyon grad Katie Russ, a junior defender, was also on the all-conference second team.

Cynthia Jacobo, who played on the Santa Clarita Blue Heat soccer team over the summer, was selected as the Big West goalkeeper of the year. The junior played at Granada Hills High School.

The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team begins playoffs on Saturday against Antelope Valley College. COC is the seventh seeded team in the California Community College Athletic Associations Southern Regional playoffs

The Cougars won the Western State Conference, Southern Division championship.

Nine athletes from The Master’s College were selected to All-Golden State Athletic Conference teams. Saugus High graduate John Gilbertson and Hart High graduate Anthony Pizzo earned spots on the all-conference men’s cross country team.

Hart High graduate Fabrice Gautrat was selected to the all-conference men’s soccer team. Jorge Serrano, a transfer from College of the Canyons, was also selected to the all-conference men’s soccer team.

Bobbie Roberts and Natasha Coyle are on the all-conference women’s soccer team. Tori Callihan is on the all-conference women’s volleyball team. Holly Kopp and Sarah Pattison were selected to the all-conference women’s cross country team.

In auto racing, Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley capped his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship with a 23rd place finish in the season finale at Phoenix International Raceway.

He led the most laps in the race, but crashed on lap 81 and did not finish.
