Canyon Football Team Wins Share Of Foothill League Title

khts_sportsThe Canyon football team soundly beat Golden Valley, 49-21, and won a share of the Foothill League championship.

Canyon receiver Drew Wolitarsky caught four touchdown passes and had 187 yards receiving. Quarterback Jonathon Jerozal passed for 356 yards and five touchdowns.

Golden Valley running back Earl Johnson gained 169 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns.

The Hart football team narrowly beat West Ranch, 42-34, and nearly blew an 18-point lead.

West Ranch’s Christian Hillo scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to cut Hart’s lead to one point, 35-34. The Wildcats tried a two-point conversion, but the run failed.

Hart quarterback Connor Wingenroth scored the final touchdown of the game on a six-yard run and gave the Indians an eight-point cushion in the fourth quarter.

A share of the Foothill League championship is up for grabs tonight in the game between Valencia and Saugus.

The two teams have won the past three Foothill League championships. Valencia has won the past two. Saugus won the league crown in 2008.

The winner of tonight’s game will have to share the Foothill League title with Canyon.

In the CIF girls volleyball playoffs, Saugus swept Canyon of Anaheim in three games and advanced to the Division 1A quarterfinals for the first time since 2004.

Jaclyn Clark led Saugus with 16 kills and 15 digs. Teammate Sarah Blomgren had 13 kills and eight digs.

The Valencia girls lost to Laguna Beach in three games and were eliminated from the Division 1A playoffs.

The Trinity Classical Academy girls lost to Baker Valley in four games and were eliminated from the Division 5A playoffs.

In the CIF girls tennis playoffs, top-seeded West Ranch won its first round match in Division 3, 16-2, over visiting Righetti.

The Valencia girls also won their first round match in the Division 3 playoffs, 14-4, over Millikan.

The Hart girls upset Redlands, 10-8, as the Indians No. 2 singles player, Proyfon Lohaphaisan swept her sets.

In the CIF girls golf playoffs, Hart’s Kendell Dusenberry and West Ranch’s Julie Ward saw their seasons come to an end at the WSCGA tournament in Murrieta. Neither player made the cut for the CIF girls golf state championship.

In hockey, the Kings lost to the Vancouver Canucks, 3-2. It was the Kings sixth loss in the past seven games.

The Canucks scored three goals in the first period and led 3-0. Drew Doughty scored a goal for the Kings in the second period. Mike Richards added a goal in the third period, but the Canucks hung on for the win.

Next up for the Kings are the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night.
