Saugus Girls Volleyball Team Sweeps West Ranch, Completes Undefeated League Season

khts_sportsThe Saugus girls volleyball team swept West Ranch in three games and completed an undefeated Foothill League season with a 10-0 record.

Jaclyn Clark had a match-high 19 kills for Saugus. The Centurions won their first Foothill League championship since 2001 and snapped Valencia’s nine-year run as the league champs.

The Vikings, meanwhile, ended their league season on a low note. Hart beat Valencia in five games, winning the fifth game, 15-13. It was the first time Hart has beaten Valencia in six years.

Brittani Elser and Sam Wiese each had 14 kills for Hart.

The Golden Valley girls outlasted Canyon in five games and won their second league match of the season.

The Grizzlies won two league matches for the first time in school history.

Sam Jennings and Ashley Lorton had 11 kills apiece to lead Golden Valley.

In high school golf, Julie Ward from West Ranch and Kendell Dusenberry from Hart made the cut at the CIF Northern Individual Regional girls golf tournament and will advance to the Southern Section final next week.

Ward, a freshman, shot a 1-under par 71 at the River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard and finished in a tie for 11th place.

Dusenberry was 3-over par at 75. The cut for the Southern Section finals at Talega Golf Course in San Clemente was 5-over par 77.

Jamie Corr from Hart and Amanda Hobbs of Golden Valley missed the cut by two strokes.

Fairmont’s Kristin Chung shot a 4-under par 68 and won the Northern Individual Regional in a playoff against Robynn Ree of Redondo.

In college soccer, The Master’s College women advanced to the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament semifinals after a 4-2 win on penalty kicks against Biola.

The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation and two overtime periods. Jessica Long gave The Master’s College a 1-0 lead with a goal in the first half.

Biola tied the score, 1-1, five minutes later in the first half.

The College of the Canyons men’s soccer team lost to Santa Barbara City College, 1-0.

In baseball, the Tampa Bay Rays picked up the option on pitcher James Shields, a Hart High graduate, for next season. Shields was 16-12 with a 2.82 ERA for the Rays in 2010. He led the American League with 11 complete games and tossed four shutouts.
