West Ranch Girls Golf Team Wins First Foothill League Championship

khts_sportsThe West Ranch girls golf team wrapped up its first Foothill League championship in school history on the first day of the Newhall Land Cup at TPC Valencia.

West Ranch leads the first day of the two-day, 27-hole, Newhall Land Cup by 17 strokes over Valencia, but it was pair of golfers from Hart who shot the low rounds of the day.

Kendell Dusenberry and Jamie Corr each shot 4-over par, 40s. West Ranch’s Jackie Kang shot a 6-over par, 42, to lead the Wildcats.

Day two of the Newhall Land Cup is today at TPC Valencia.

In high school volleyball, the Saugus girls improved to 6-0 in Foothill League by downing Valencia in four games and handed the Vikings their second league loss of the season.

But Saugus middle blocker Ashley Pagan injured her ankle in the match.

Sarah Blomgren had 14 kills to lead Saugus and Hannah Nua had 12 kills, nine in the fourth and deciding game.

The Hart girls swept Golden Valley in three games. Amy King had 14 kills and Brittani Elser had eight kills.

The Trinity Classical Academy girls volleyball team lost to Hillcrest Christian in four games. Julia Howell had 12 kills and three blocks for Trinity, which lost its first Omega League match of the season.

In college golf, the College of the Canyons women’s team won the Western State Conference tournament by two strokes, 306-308, over Glendale at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.

COC’s Kristen Grimes shot the low round of the day, a 3-over par 75. Taylor Gould carded a 4-over par 76 for COC.

In college soccer, The Master’s College women shut out Fresno Pacific, 4-0, scoring three goals in the second half.

Rachel Hartenberger, Bobbie Roberts and Alissa Adkins each had a goal and an assist for The Master’s College.

The Valencia Flyers ice hockey team split a pair of games with the Long Beach Bombers over the weekend.

Defenseman Preston Nowak scored his first goal of the season to beat the Bombers, 3-2, in the first game.

But the Bombers won the second game against the Flyers, 4-2. J.P. Bouchard and Dillon Thomas scored for the Flyers.

In the NHL, the Kings shut out the Blues, 5-0, in their home opener at Staples Center.

Goaltender Jonathan Quick made 27 saves and recorded the 15th shutout of his career. It was also the 99th win of his career.
