ELECTION 2011: Messina Interviews COC Seat #4 Candidates

COC-News-sidebarWith the November 8 election only three weeks away, candidates for various local school boards are out in the community to tell the voters why they should be the ones picked for public service.

Joe Messina, host of the KHTS show “The Real Side” recently spent time in the studio with the candidates for each board office. His first guests were Bruce Fortine and Diana Shaw, who are vying for Seat #4 on the governing board of the Santa Clarita Community College District, better known as College of the Canyons.

Shaw, a businesswoman and attorney, has challenged Fortine, one of the founding members of the board who has served for more than four decades.

Fortine emphasized his background with a business administration degree and masters in education administration.

“I’m still on the planning team and there are big things to come,” he said. “It’s tough to get into any college and part of what we have to do at COC is look for new ways of doing things.”

Shaw said she was grateful for Fortine’s longtime service, but said she believed it was time for a change.

“I was approached by teachers, actually, who said that they were very frustrated being heard,” she said. “They asked me would I consider running against Bruce. I’m very grateful for his longtime service, but it’s the 21st century, it’s not 1967. We live in a bustling community with a lot of demands and problems. I said OK, I’m going to do this, I’m going to be a different kind of trustee.”

The entire discussion with Messina and the candidates can be heard here.
