Person Of Interest In Freeway Shootings Taken Into Custody By CHP

chplogoA suspect vehicle that was the subject of emergency alert postings on freeway CMS signs overnight was seen on the southbound 14 this morning by an alert motorist and California Highway Patrol officers took a person of interest into custody.

CHP Officer John Lutz reported that the alerts were prompted after a shooting spree yesterday in San Diego County. On Monday afternoon, suspects in a white Chevy Malibu allegedly shot at a car on the northbound 805 in the Carmel Valley area, hitting a motorist in the leg.

The car was also seen on the northbound 805 near Plaza Boulevard where another vehicle was fired upon and a man reported finding a bullet had pierced some luggage in his back seat. The third incident involved a CHP officer who was in the vicinity of the northbound 805 and northbound SR 163 and the fourth incident connected to the Chevy involved a passing ambulance that was fired upon on the northbound I-5 near Del Mar Heights.

A description of the car was put on the freeway message board along with the car’s license plate number, 5POM917, and a driver spotted the suspect vehicle on the southbound 14 this morning.

The informant followed the car southbound on the 14, calling 9-1-1 and the CHP picked up the chase as the vehicle traveled southbound on the I-5, eastbound on the 118 and eastbound on the 210.

Officers followed the car off the freeway at Osborne, where the driver turned around the returned to the freeway at Osborne and an enforcement stop was conducted on the shoulder of the Osborne onramp.

enriqueayonmugshotEnrique Ayon, 24, who was named as a person of interest when the initial crime broadcast was made, was behind the wheel of the car, which is registered to him at his Lancaster address. He was taken into custody without incident during the traffic stop.

According to Lutz, the vehicle was impounded and Ayon was being taken to the Newhall office of the CHP for questioning.
